Getting Started with Your Treat Box
So you want to start a treat box? Or maybe you’re helping someone in your neighborhood do it — even better! Getting started is easy. All you need is a free Hearts and Hounds account to create and update your very own treat box page.
Creating Your Virtual Treat Box
Once you’re registered, head to your account to set up your virtual treat box. This is where you’ll give your box a name, receive your box number, share a little bit about yourself, and — most importantly — highlight the local animal shelters you’d like to promote. There is no limit to the number of shelters you can add to your page, but we recommend adding just one or two so you can draw more attention to them.
Your Physical Treat Box
After your page is created, it’s time to bring your physical treat box to life. You can start simple with something like a cookie container, or go big and build a custom box with your family. Anything with a lid or secure closure will do — just make sure it’s animal-safe and weather-friendly. You can also purchase a treat box from us, or we’re happy to provide building plans and a materials list if you want to make your own. However you do it, we encourage you to be creative and have fun. The dogs will find the treats either way — but a cheerful or clever box will brighten someone’s day, too.
Promoting Your Page
In your account, you’ll find links to your treat box page. You can paint or label one of these URLs onto your physical box so that visitors can easily find your page. We also offer custom stickers with your box number and link, and we’re happy to work with you if you’d like something unique. (This is a small, grassroots effort — special requests are welcome.) Just make sure your link is visible. If your box is close to the ground, consider putting the label on the lid so it’s easy to read from above.
Treats
When it comes to the treats, feel free to use store-bought ones or bake your own — just be mindful of common dog allergies. At our house, we use Wiggles & Wags Peanut Butter Chewy Bones — they’re soft and affordable, and the pups love them. Choose something that fits your budget and comfort level. Dogs aren’t picky, and you’re already doing something generous — you don’t need to overextend yourself to make an impact.
Visitors
As your treat box sees more visitors, you may receive sweet comments on your page. If you don’t, that’s okay — the empty box and happy tails tell the story. You’re putting something kind out into the world. And if just one person visits a shelter because of your page, you’ve made a real difference — for your community and for a dog waiting for their forever home.
Thank you for stepping up. Every treat shared, every story told, and every shelter highlighted helps grow this movement. We’re so glad you’re a part of Hearts and Hounds.
