About
How It Works
Hearts and Hounds is a grassroots network of dog lovers using simple sidewalk kindness to raise awareness for shelter animals. We provide the framework—signage, donation links, and inspiration—so that anyone can set up a dog treat box in their own yard, park, or neighborhood space. Each box is independently created and maintained by a local dog lover who wanted to do a little good for pups in their community.
What makes this special is that it doesn’t rely on a central organization to do the work—you do. Anyone can purchase a box kit, fill it with dog treats, and personalize it with their own story and list of supported shelters. The result? A hyper-local, feel-good moment for passersby and a meaningful spotlight on adoptable dogs that need a home.
Mission
Our mission is to make helping shelter dogs feel natural, joyful, and part of everyday life.
We know that big change starts with small actions. That’s why Hearts and Hounds is built on a simple but powerful idea: let dog lovers help other dogs, one treat at a time, in their own neighborhoods and in their own way.
This isn’t a traditional nonprofit (nor is it a nonprofit at all actually). We don’t take donations or stock the boxes. Instead, we equip individuals with the tools to do it themselves—so the movement can grow faster, feel personal, and stay rooted in community. Every box reflects the love and effort of someone who believes in second chances for dogs who haven’t found their people yet.
Hearts and Hounds is about connection, compassion, and the little things that ripple outward. A treat shared. A dog’s story told. A stranger who stops to read. Together, these moments add up to something real—and we’re so glad you’re part of it.
